Is the data on my external hard drive gone for good?
I have a 500GB Western Digital external hard drive that fell off of a desk that is about 3 feet tall and landed on an area rug. Since this happened, whenever I plug it into any computer it is unable to recognize that the hard drive is plugged in at all. The drive itself powers up and spins, but after about 3 seconds, it skips a couple of times and stops spinning. I have so many pictures and tax documents that I would love to get back, if possible. Am I completely screwed, or can it somehow be recovered? I would love to get some feedback on here before taking it to the Geek Squad or someone similar… Thanks for looking!
When you say it skips, it sounds as if the external hard drive’s hard drive is going to crash. You can try using this and seeing if it works:

You connect the old hard drive to this device, and then the device to a another computer or laptop via USB. You would then be able to access all the files on it.
