manic panic hair dye?
I’m going to dye my hair pink [I bought hot, hot pink at Sally's] soon, and I wanted to know if anyone had any tips.
I know manic panic sucks, but they didn’t have SFX or anything there, so I just got that. I don’t really care how long it lasts–I’ll be quitting my job soon and doing job interviews so it’d actually be good if it didn’t last that long.
I’ve heard people saying a lot of different things–mix it with conditioner, leave it on overnight, etc. It wouldn’t damage my hair if left on overnight, would it? I know it’s veggie dye, but my hair’s not in the greatest condition so I want to make sure.
I’m not dyeing my whole head pink, just my bangs and the layers around my face. Any tips would be appreciated!
The thing about Manic Panic is that it is a vegan semi-permanent dye. It is designed to sit on the hair follicle, only penetrating the outer layers. It does not damage your hair (obviously if you bleach your hair first that will cause damage, but not the dye) and actually benefits it (plus I think it smells really nice).
The simplest way to keep the color in is to put it in your hair, process with heat (like your hairdryer) and leave it in overnight, also when you rinse it, first pour a mixture of half white vinegar half water over it and let that soak in a bit (this raises the pH of the dye so it is less affected by shampoo) and when you rinse the color out use lukewarm to col water. Then when you wash your hair use a color safe shampoo and conditioner.
Manic Panic gets a bad rep, especially when compared to the likes of SFX, because most people are comparing a semi-permanent dye to a permanent dye- of course it’s not going to last as long.
I personally choose Manic Panic because I feel like it will be better for my hair in the long run because I color it so often and because, as corny as it sounds, I try to lighten whatever chemical load I’m offputting into the world.
