How can papaya leaves help to preserve cloth color?
My grandmother would boil papaya leaves and soak her new garment in the hot boiled water for one night before washing it. It is a traditional belief that this prevents the color of the cloth from fading. I want to do a science class research on this. Anyone has any idea what are the contents in the papaya leaves that provide this properties?
Leaves of papaya contain a variety of substances, including: vitamin A , vitamin B1, vitamin C , protein, calcium, phosphorus , iron, papayotin, kautsyuk, karpain, karposit, papain. Papain is an enzyme that people take to aid digestion. It may have something to do with the bonding of the colors. I would also think the calcium would have some benefit to the bonding of the colors. I have not heard of people using the leaves for the purpose that you stated . This link may help.
