Choosing a Linen Pocket Square

A suit or a sports coat with an empty breast pocket is unfinished business. Purposely created to harmonize with other men’s accessories the pochette collection has been inspired by the need for balance. There are not only many different colors, patterns, and pocket square styles to choose from, but there are also quite a few different ways to fold a pochette. If a suit and tie is part of the regular work attire, then there is probably a good chance of getting a little bored with the same look everyday.

Looking to add a more unique style, a pair of brown shoes, brown belt, as well as French cuffed shirts worn with a set of cufflinks may be added. Still on the search for more accessories that add style to an outfit, consider wearing a Linen pocket square. The most formal Linen pocket square is a solid color, usually white. Less formal are solid navy blue and burgundy red hankies. And least formal but still very classy, are pochettes with more color and more design.

A paisley pattern pochette in burgundy red, green, and navy blue is more casual and will add a very elegant-sophisticated touch without appearing too formal. The true fashion expert will wear a pochette that has its own unique color and pattern and matches well to the rest of the outfit. As a general rule, combine colors that are part of the same color family. A pastel tone square in a light blue color will look great with neckties that are also in lighter pastel colors such as light pink, orange, and lime green.

If you like to wear a Linen pocket square with more pattern, then make sure to vary the pattern size on the pocket square, dress shirt, jacket, and the necktie. Many centuries ago, Pochettes were used as men’s handkerchiefs for hygienic purposes – that’s all there is to it! Prior to the 17th century, only the upper society used such until it was also practiced by the lower classes. Not intended to be a fashion accessory, they were used just like ordinary hankies are today, tucked in the pants instead of the breast pocket. It was only regarded as a classic accessory when the suit design with pocket squares came in early 20th Century. With that, along came the many intriguing folding techniques. And so today, the pocket square remains an important men’s accessories when trying to add a little extra style to an outfit.
