Plan of Iguala, it made everyone Mexican?
I heard that this plan made Native Americans Mexican, did that include tribes like the Apache and Navajo, and Hopi who lived in the area before it was taken by the USA? I also heard this plan made Africans Mexican? I need to know, for a project I am doing for an ancestry project, I have some Southwestern American Native in me, would that mean I have some Mexican heritage?
Not for sure but I think I have Navajo ancestry.
No, Plan de Iguala was not about making everyone Mexican.
Plan de Iguala was proclaimed by Agustín de Iturbide and Vicente Guerrero at the end of the Mexican Independence war. It declared:
1. Mexican independence from Spain.
2. Catholic Church as the only Mexican religion.
3. That all Mexicans had the same rights, no matter what ethnic group they belonged to.
This declarations were also called the three guarantees: independence, religion and union.
So, in the time Mexico won its independence, some US territory belonged to Mexico (or to Nueva España, before that), divided in 3 regions, Alta California, Nuevo México and Texas. All the people from those places were Mexicans, including groups native to those areas. It is important to mention that since the Spanish missions settled in those areas, the native groups stayed apart and kept their distance, contrary to what happened in other parts of what is now Mexico, giving way to the actual Mexican culture. What Plan de Iguala did was proclaim they were equal to the Mexicans of Spanish origin and mestizos.
As for heritage, it can be seen from different angles, and please don’t get me wrong, it’s just my point of view. I would say that you may have some Mexican biological heritage, because Native Americans were Mexicans, but I would say that Mexican cultural heritage (traditions) was never adopted by those groups.
