How do you fill in spaces easily with solid black using Photoshop when drawing a comic?

I use Photoshop CS.
I know the Fill tool but it leaves white spaces even if the line is closed for large spaces that need to be filled.
Is vectoring the only easy way to achieve smooth solid blacks when drawing comics?

Vectoring is definitely best.

I took some animation classes in college and they always taught us that vectoring is really the only way to achieve the smooth crispness you see in most animations/comics. The fill tool to be used properly needs to be Feathered, which makes your line slightly blurry.

I use vectoring for everything along those lines. It takes a little longer, but if you get fast at it, it’s not as arduous, and if you maybe have a friend or two who can help you, it can go really fast.
