How should I clean an area rug on a hardwood floor?

We have a very large area rug that is made from a carpet remnant. It is on our hardwood floor. It desperately needs to be cleaned and rather than hiring someone to do it, I was wondering if we could do it ourselves. I’m assuming that steaming it while it’s on the hardwood is a bad idea. We live in MN and it is getting pretty cold outside, so that is not an option. What would a professional cleaner do?

You can actually take the area rug into a carpet cleaner place. Instead of them, coming to you. They can steam clean it quickly and the price would be alot less then them making an house call.
