will i ruin my living room carpet/rug if i wipe it down with a rag and hot water/soap?

its brand new.. but it smells awful.. like a burnt popcorn/broken vacuum smell.
i tried to let it air out for days .. not working.. and its too heavy to bring otuside..
its very light colored..
is it okay to ripe it down with soap and water and a rag?? will the soap do anything to the rug?
and is there a better option? to wash it with

The best way to keep a rug clean is to keep it from getting dirty in the first place. Removing outdoor shoes when entering the house (as people do in most rug-weaving countries) is a good idea if this accords with your lifestyle. Bare-foot or sock-foot traffic is much gentler to a rug than a hard outdoor-shoe sole (or spike heel), and leaving your outdoor shoes at the entrance to the house tracks in much less dirt.

Be aware that it is not advised to use carpet shampoos or sprays!

Carpet shampoos if not rinsed out thoroughly, usually end up attracting more dirt, and with carpet shampooing machines (especially ones with several brushes) care must be taken to avoid damage to your area rugs.

Know that if you do plan to shampoo your carpet yourself you should first sweep or brush the carpet so that the nap stands up and loosens any embedded dirt. Then vacuum. By doing this, the carpet might look clean enough so that you could delay shampooing it.

Neutralize odors by sprinkling a mixture of 1 cup Borax and 2 cups cornmeal. Allow to stand for an hour before vacuuming.

You can also use commercially available fragrance powders for vacuums they might work too.

You can sprinkle baking powder all over the carpet.The longer you leave the baking soda on the floor, the better it will clean and freshen the carpet up.
It cleans up the area where the smell originated and stops it from getting in the air.
