Chester’s Modern Culture

Chester is a county town in Cheshire, England, located in what is known as the English Northwest. Chester lies on the River Dee, a water body that borders Wales. Chester is best known for the Roman settlements that made the city’s fortifications. These fortifications were made to fend off the incoming Welsh from the border. Known as Deva Victrix, Chester was already an active town as early as AD 79. After the Romans left the city, the Saxons replaced them and spruced up its defence against the Danes. Today, Chester is known as one of the most excellent medieval cities in England

Chester’s rich history has made it a city of interest for both foreign and local tourists. For the locals, Chester represents a long English past preserved in its Roman walls. For the foreign tourists, Chester symbolizes the old England, signifying the roots that made this nation one of the greatest empires in the world. Thus, Chester has key heritage sites like the Chester Cathedral and the Chester Zoo. The Chester Cathedral was built on top of a thousand year old church. The church is of medieval, monastic design that predates England’s Victorian past.

Chester has modern attractions and contemporary tourist activities on top of the classic tours and museum exploration that one can do. Play seekers can visit the Catton Hall paintballing station, a 200-acre field that depicts Chester’s fortifications, villages, bridges, and forts. Another fun combat simulation is available in the Catton Hall archery field. You can try out test targets with a wide variety of bow and arrows. Archery is a demonstration of England’s roster of arrow snipers that helped fortify the city against foreign invaders. Other activities in Chester include adventure sightseeing and heritage tours.

Like other English towns, wining and dining is a staple for tourists in Chester. Chester’s collection of restaurants is further emphasized by the local fresh produce that makes these foods. The Simon Radley at the Chester Grosvenor is a French gourmet restaurant that has a large collection of food and wine. Tourists have to shell up the money for formal jackets to get in. If you want a more casual atmosphere, the Upstairs at the Grill gives you a combination of relaxation and soothing wines along with specialty cuts of meat and fish. The Upstairs at the Grill is a two-floor expanse of sheer fun and intrigue.

Chester’s brand of entertainment resides in its festivals happening all year round. Each festival brings something to the table, and since the happenings are lined up throughout the year, there will be always something new that you will come back to. The Chester Races holds its event on the racecourse facing the river Dee. The horserace festival happens almost every month. Colourful kites fly atop the racecourse during the Chester kite festival. Here you can watch fliers perform kite acrobatics, synchronized flying, and altitude sprints. Chester also has a number of food and drink festivals that are scheduled in line with other festivities.

Chester has a little bit of everything for everyone. From great food, great sights, and great events, Chester’s place in England as a historic city is further expressed in the energy of the city. Not only will one celebrate its glorious past, but also tourists will come out impressed of the city’s evolution to a prominent tourist town.
