What identification card or passport is required to pass the Detroit / Windsor border and back?

I live in the Detroit metropolitan area, and I trying to figure out exactly what type of documentation that I need to visit Windsor, Canada, and then return to Detroit across the border. I've heard that the difficulties have to returning to the U.S. instead of leaving. Do I need a passport full? I've heard it's just another card can be obtained from the Secretariat State can come to Canada and vice versa. I have 19 years, so I am of legal age in both countries. What do I need to get to Canada and return? Thanks!

I live in Windsor, across the border frequently. First Since June 2009, one of the following valid documents became a requirement for cross Windsor Detroit border: (a) a passport, (b) a passport card, (c) an enhanced driver license (this is a special license may apply at Michigan that has a chip embedded in it for identification), (d) a Nexus card. Your birth certificate and photo identification as a regular driver's license no longer work. If you are just looking for something that will get over the border between Canada and the United States in a vehicle, the passport is enough (And cheaper than a passport), but if you plan to fly outside the United States sometime soon, or sometime in the future, the passport will not work and you need the complete passport (book), which is more expensive but is necessary for the international flight.
