How do you vaccum a leather rug?

It is a shag type rug made with leather strips. I need to know how to vaccum it without tearing it up or blowing up my vaccum cleaner. I have a dog that sheds horribly twice a year and well, this is one them!

I would suggest using a brush attachment, rather than the heavy part of the vacuum. If it’s small enough, you might be better off taking the rug frequently to shake it out outside.
