Serapi rugs are made in the Heriz region of Azerbaijan. These area rugs have been hand woven by local artisans for thousands of years and the skill has been passed from generation to generation. They were initially used by the local villagers but an export boom in the 19th century created a worldwide market for these rugs.

Quality and material used

A genuine hand-made Serapi rug is a one-of-a-kind product made using more than seventy knots for every square inch of the rug surface. These rugs are known for their intricate patterns and high attention to detail. They are made using wool and known for their sturdiness and durability. The wool used in Serapi rugs is considered to be the strongest among all wools as the sheep from the region where they are made drink water that contains copper traces.

Design

Serapi rugs have elaborate designs. They are generally made using symmetrical knots and come with a central medallion pattern. They are usually bright colored with the commonly used colors being red, ivory, blues and pinks. Both natural and synthetic dyes are used to make these rugs.

Each rug comes with its unique, identifiable motif. They consist of an intricate border pattern and a big center medallion flanked by a secondary design pattern. The great thing about these rugs is that they are immediate attention grabbers and rarely come in simple patterns. A big Serapi rug placed in the living room will instantly light up the entire space with its color and magnificence.

Traditional designs have simpler and plainer backgrounds. But the area rug patterns are complex and detailed. Star and diamond shaped medallions are most commonly used. Authentic Serapi rugs are hand knotted and use vegetable dyes.

This is not to say that all Serapi area rugs are vibrant and animated. There are those available in earthy tones of brown and beige that lend a sober yet sophisticated feel to the room. These rugs come in different shapes and sizes, the most common being rectangular and square. Based on the size of the rugs, you can place them in appropriate areas of the house.

Antique vs. mass market Serapi rugs

Authentic and antique Serapi area rugs are worth thousands of dollars. These rugs are recognized all over the world for their rarity and artistic value. These are late 19th century rugs and generally purchased by antique collectors and those who want to make a statement with their home décor. Owners of these rugs have to handle them with care and they usually hang them on walls as opposed to using them as floor coverings.

The ones available at your local store are likely to be copies of original rugs. These rugs are cheap and mostly of the machine made variety. They are strong and durable, and are a great option for adding some style to your home.

An authentic Serapi rug is an expensive buy, but if you can afford it, it is a great way to improve your home interiors. If you find the price to be too steep, you can consider buying the mass market variety of Serapi area rugs.
