It is true that a handmade Persian Rug is as beautiful as it is mysterious, specially when we remember stories about flying carpets where the lover travels long distance to come and take his lover away from the hands of her tyrant keeper. It is also true that it is very difficult to judge the authenticity of a Persian Rug. That’s why it is extremely important that you go to an esteemed Persian Rugs dealer who is known for his trade and specialization in handmade rugs. It is also wished that this person has many years of experience.

For a newcomer in the business of buying Persian Rugs, it is the worst thing to buy at going out of business sales and traveling auctions. In those places, they have a huge selection of items and the prices are so low that it is very tempting to buy. You should know something very important though. Usually, these are outlets that deal with rejected goods and, at the bottom of the page, they don’t offer any real savings. This is the right place to implement the “Buyer be aware” policy.

Personally, I would advise you to deal with direct importers of handmade Persian Rugs, a place where you feel comfortable, where you receive good service, where all your questions are answered with clarity and with knowledge. The staff should be able to tell you where the rug has been fabricated, the age, the fiber content, and even, why not, its history. Most of all you should be able to find honesty and integrity. With all that considered, I cannot stress enough the importance to ask for a certificate of authenticity.

When you feel pressured, just walk away. A good dealer will allow you to view as many rugs as you need to view. Some of them even allow you to take the carpet home to get the feel of it in your own home décor and if you didn’t like it, you can return them within a time limit upon which both merchant and buyer have agreed.

Often I am told that Persian Rugs are very expensive. The value of an object is in the eyes of the beholder. It is true that a handmade Persian Rug is more expensive than its counterpart the machine made one, all things considered, it ends up to be much cheaper. Beside, there are handmade carpets for all budgets and all tastes. To find the right Persian Rug for your budget and your taste go out shopping. The best place to start is the online shops, where you will find a great range of handmade Persian and Oriental rugs of different qualities, tastes and prices. They are usually sold at discounted prices to move them as fast as they can. Most of the dealers give the purchaser an explication on how the rug is made, where it is made, how old it is, the fiber content, the knots count per square inch and best of all, they send it to your home free of charge and you can experience the feel with your own interior design and if you decide you don’t like it, you can return it and it will cost you nothing. This is the actual way of buying. Or, you can go the traditional way and visit the different rug stores of your city until you find the right carpet for your taste and budget.

Now that you found the right rug, you have a new dilemma. What size should you buy? Well, the easiest rooms to cover are the entry way, the living room and the bedroom. There are however two areas in a house that are size sensitive. The one is the hallway. The only way you can cover a narrow and long hallway is with runner which should cover the entire length to cover. You cannot have it too short all too long. The shortest you can afford to have the runner is about one feet on either side. Not any shorter than that. You cannot have it longer either, otherwise you will have to roll under or pull it out out the hallway to fit it properly. Either way, you are stealing from its beauty and decorative value. In the case of the dining room, the Persian Rug should be big enough to cover under the whole table plus, you should allow a foot and a half all around it to allow movement of the chairs without being entangled into the rug’s edges.

As you realized by now, buying a Persian Rug can be quite challenging. However, if you find a dealer in whom you can trust, it can be fun and quite informative. You will find out that as you are searching for that exact rug, you are learning many new things that will make the purchasing of the Persian Rug based on knowledge and not just like and dislike.
