Geometric Red
What is the geometric shape of a red blood cell? NOT HOMEWORK?
What kind of equation would describe the shape of a red blood cell? (surface area & volume) I imagine it’s kind of like a torus with a membrane streched over it and concave in the center. Wouldn’t the surface of this shape be both spherical and hyperbolic? This is NOT a homework question and I am only in Calc I so please dont give any extemely technical answer. This question has been nagging me for a year, but I just don’t have the mathematical background yet to solve it. Thanks!
An interesting question that I’ve also thought about,
but never acted upon.
I immediately thought of the Ovals of Cassini.
Maybe you could contort the equation(s) to suit yourself,
then take part of it, “spin it around the axes” to create
a solid of revolution, and apply calculus equations to
find the surface area and volume.
Of course, you won’t get perfection. Do we even know
what the perfect red cell looks like? Do red cells know
what perfect shape they should have, given all the
interacting variables? Anyway, I’m sure it’s possible
to get close to the average shape. I hope you succeed.
